Description

Handmade Japanese-Style Cotton Futon

The Futonz Traditional Cotton Futon is a handmade Japanese-style cotton futon mattress, made in New Zealand. Designed for sleeping directly on the floor, this traditional futon is made from three layers of cotton batting. It provides a firm, stable sleeping surface with no springs or elastic push-back.

Made to Order in West Auckland

Each Traditional Cotton Futon is handmade to order in our West Auckland workshop.

We carefully layer carded cotton bundles to fill a given futon cover size, then hand tuft the cotton together through the mattress cover to hold them in place. This 100% cotton sleeping mat is based on ‘cotton bud mattresses’ like those used in Japan, Korea and China for centuries. Our modern version uses ‘carded cotton’, where the raw buds are de-husked, then the ‘ staple fiber’ is cleaned and combed so that the strands of cotton are evenly intertwined into a thick, matted roll. It is not the compressed or ‘packed’ style of raw cotton that we’ve seen used in India and are sometimes asked about.

Compact and Convenient

Our cotton futon mattress is easy to roll up and store during the day, making it ideal for minimalist bedrooms, Japanese-style interiors, guest sleeping spaces, camping, vans and anyone looking for a simple natural alternative to a conventional mattress.

The total loft is about 7cm new, compressing over 5 years of expected use.

Cotton Futon Usage and Care

This mattress is designed to be used directly on the floor. It should be rolled up and stored away during the day, or rolled up and sunned inside. This allows the cotton to air and maintains the cotton loft.

We can recondition Traditional Cotton Futons with further layers of carded cotton, or replacement covers, please enquire above.

My wife and I have been sleeping our our futons now for a week, after I picked them up late last week from your factory, and we both love them!

Futon is exceptional - kudos to you & your team.

After 2 trains, a bus and a 20 minute walk we finally arrived at this shop at the edge of the city. It was worth every step. The sales person was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly & the beds well displayed and comfortable. They helped us decide on the perfect futon for us. After purchasing for delivery in 2 weeks, they were even so kind as to give us a lift back to the train station. Highly recommended experience. Once you buy a “Futonz” futon you’ll never be swayed to buy a “fancy” mattress from TV again. We love our futon!

I just wanted to say a big thank you for the futon. It’s so well made and very comfortable! We have been struggling to find something similar to what we had in Japan, but this is actually more comfortable and our toddler sleeps much better on this than our bed or cot. Again thank you, it’s been amazing!

Futonz have made the most comfortable cotton futon that we could own. We have been sleeping on it for about 2 months now, just amazing sleep! The owner and staff were helpful, and it only took under a week to get the futon made.

Love it! There is a real beauty in its simple elegance, and the quality and craftsmanship are obvious right away. It is a piece I am proud to have in the house alongside my eclectic collection of solid wood furniture, handcrafted pieces from recycled timber and occasional antiques. And it is WAY more comfortable than the doubled over mink blanket on the floor that I have been sleeping on - lol.

Thank you so much for the elegant futon that arrived promptly and carefully packaged. It is expertly made and satisfies all my requirements.and looks lovely in my minimalist setting. I have had two wonderful sleeps already and this ability to fall asleep and wake refreshed is something I had previously found difficult. I love the firm feel of the futon and it is so easy to pick up. Thank you very much. I am thrilled.

Just wanted to say how much I love my new mattress! I've been sleeping on it every night for a week and it's perfect! My back feels so much better (I have been sleeping on a foam pad for 2 years as normal mattresses are too soft).

Anu

Hamilton

The futon has been the right temperature, very comfortable to lie and sleep on, easy to use and doesn't take long to roll up in the mornings and roll and reverse to flat at night. The separate cotton cover has also been easy to wash, and quick to dry and slip over the futon. It too feels right. I'm very happy with the natural materials that both futon and cover are made from, and am so happy they're made right here in NZ. Thanks again for getting the futon and cover to me so quickly.
