Buying Guide: Cot Mattresses to Kids Beds

Cot Mattresses
We make organic latex cot mattresses and futon cot mattresses for babies and young children. Both latex mattresses and futons are naturally supportive, warm, dry, and healthy. They are a great choice for kids bassinets and cots. They can be made to your specifications with a choice of materials and flexibility around sizes.

Important Bed Considerations
Safety and Health – At Futonz we use a range of natural materials completely free from toxins and metal. For babies, we recommend a firmer mattress for safety reasons.

Many children – especially those with allergies or asthma – are sensitive to artificial and synthetic materials. Futonz provide organic, natural and hypoallergenic material options, especially through our latex range.

Materials
Organic latex – We use only organic latex, meaning there are no chemicals used in the growing or processing of the material. Latex is a 100% natural material made from sap from the rubber tree.

Natural cotton – Cotton is also 100% natural, coming from within the seed pods of the cotton plant, Gossypium hirsutum. We use raw cotton in our futons, and our futon covers and protectors are also made from 100% cotton.

Organic wool – Wool allows air to circulate and wicks excess moisture out of the mattress, keeping it fresh and dry. For Cot Futons, we use organic NZ wool.

Density
Our experience and research suggest that there is increasing consensus that firm cot mattresses are best for sleeping babies. Research indicates that this reduces the chance of SIDS. Medium feel latex has a firm and dense feel, making it the perfect material for cot mattresses.

Size
We make infant and baby mattresses to your size specifications. Simply tell us your cot frame size and we will make a mattress to fit.

Questions
Please contact us if you have any questions – you’ll be talking to someone that actually makes child mattresses – and so we are able to give advice on the size and material to best suit your child.

Beds for Toddlers
The basic bed base is perfect for toddlers! Since it is low to the ground your child can get in and out of bed easily, and you don’t have to worry about your child falling out of the bed.

The toddler bed follows on from the cot and is usually made for children aged around two to three years of age when they are capable of climbing out and escaping cots! When your baby outgrows a cot, a single mattress with a simple low futon frame is a good transition. The Basic Bed Base combined with a futon or latex mattress is a great choice that will last for a long time.

Children Aged Three to Teens
Futons or latex mattresses are great at this age and will provide a healthy sleep environment for growing bodies. Turned regularly, futons will be comfortable for 5-10 years, and we can recondition them with fresh cotton to extend this further. Latex mattresses are strong and resilient and will last for at least 20 years without special care. The latex mattresses do not require turning.

Choosing a Mattress
Health professionals often recommend organic, natural and hypoallergenic materials for a mattress for kids. This is particularly true for children with allergies or asthma.

We have a 7 days trial period we extend to all our standard mattresses and sizes.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding choosing a mattress for your child! We will be happy to help.

Futonz Sleep Allergy Guide

Organic latex mattresses have helped many people who used to suffer from sleep allergies.

Do you have difficulty sleeping due to itchy skin, difficulty breathing or other sleep irritations? Common sleep allergy causes are dust mites, fungus, and chemical materials in the bed. These may also aggravate conditions like asthma, eczema and chronic rhinitis.

Futonz Latex Mattresses and Pillows have proven effective solutions to such reactions, allowing sleep to be restful, healthy and comfortable.

What Is An Allergy?
Allergies are your body’s immune system reacting defensively to substances in the environment. Dustmite and mould allergies cause similar symptoms to hay fever or a long running cold, including an itchy or congested nose, watering eyes, sneezing, coughing or other breathing problems.

Chemical allergy symptoms range from difficulty sleeping to headaches in the morning. For many symptoms your doctor can refer you for testing through the NZ public health system. This is usually inexpensive and as simple as a skin prick test.

Allergy Treatment
The most effective way to eliminate allergy symptoms is to reduce exposure to triggers. If symptoms occur during the night or morning then your bed is the most likely source of the problem.

How do Latex Mattresses Reduce Sleep Allergies?
Latex is a completely natural material made from the sap of the rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis. The latex we use is formed of countless tiny bubbles. These are air and moisture permeable, but too small to harbour significant amounts of dust. Latex is very breathable and provides a dry and clean sleep environment. Latex is also resistant to dust mites.

Latex is naturally anti-fungal, a quality it retains from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree. This means latex mattresses are resistant to mold and other fungus. This quality also contributes to the excellent longevity of latex mattresses.

We surround the latex core of the futons with pure wool or a wool blend that ensures air circulation and actively disperses moisture, inhibiting mould and reducing humidity – further discouraging dust mites.

The latex we use at Futonz does not contain any toxic chemicals or synthetic additives. Therefore our latex mattresses are hypoallergenic and suitable for many people with sensitivity to chemicals.

What are Dust Mites?
Dust mites are tiny bugs in the Arachnid family and they are found across the world.

Dust mites eat decomposing protein dust, like shed skin cells. Decay is caused by fungus and mould. Latex deters dust mites as it is dust resistant, does not retain moisture and is anti-fungal.

Solutions to Sleep Allergies
While dust mites, mould spores and chemicals are virtually impossible to completely eradicate from the home, a dust free and dry environment with an appropriate bed does wonders to reducing exposure.

If you notice allergy symptoms during or after sleeping, a latex mattress and pillow could be the perfect solution.

We’ve designed Futonz Latex Mattresses to deter dust mites and promote your health, as well as supporting your body in optimum comfort.

Bed Buying Guide

It may be stating the obvious, but we suggest you choose the kind of mattress that you are most comfortable sleeping on, unless a medical practitioner has given specific advice. A firm mattress is not always better for health or back pain. And a soft mattress is not always more comfortable throughout the night. Peoples’ mattress preferences often change over time.

Make sure you buy your mattress from a retailer that will let you take the bed home to try, and return it for a refund or exchange if it’s not suitable. Trying a bed for 10 minutes in a showroom is quite different from eight hours of sleep.

Futonz offers a 7 day trial on our entire standard range.

Chiropractors and orthopaedic surgeons regularly recommend either futons or latex mattresses (for different reasons) for muscle, joint or back pain. The most frequent cause of back pain seems to be caused by a bed that’s sagging in the middle, but if you have sleep discomfort we recommend asking a specialist what kind of mattress is most likely to help you before deciding on one.

If you buy from Futonz you will get:

  • An amazingly comfortable bed!
  • Best value for money (for the quality and amount of materials we use, and workmanship, we keep our prices the best in New Zealand)
  • Top quality materials (Organic latex, Natural Cotton, NZ grown pine and macrocarpa timber)
  • Peace of mind with a 5 year or 10 year guarantee
